The Traditional Method involves installing 4–6 mil sheets of plastic between the studs and cement backerboard (the substrate). By stapling the plastic to the studs, a moisture barrier is formed that prevents the framing from getting wet. Cement backerboard—a lightweight, durable material made of concrete or concrete-based fiber—remains dimensionally stable even when exposed to moisture
Although the cement backerboard can absorb water over time, the plastic barrier ensures that the frame is protected and that water is directed toward the drain. This method requires only two materials: plastic sheeting and cement backerboard, though roofing felt can be substituted for the plastic if needed
Topical Waterproofing Method​
With the Topical Method, the waterproofing membrane is applied directly over the cement backerboard or substrate. Tile is then installed directly on top of the membrane, preventing water from reaching the substrate or framing.
